BURLINGTON, VERMONT: November
18, 2005: Atlantis Systems
International has selected
Ascension Technology’s
laserBIRD™ for head tracking
in its new affordable training
simulator. Atlantis’ Helicopter
Vocational Trainer (HVT)
employs virtual reality
technology to train a pilot
in flight-operation tasks.
Target markets include simulators
for military and civilian
helicopter and vertical
takeoff aircraft.
HVT immerses the pilot
in a 360° virtual world,
presented in a head-mounted
display, whose stereo image
viewpoints are instantaneously
updated by the laserBIRD.
For added realism, the trainer
is motion based with electric
control loaders and computer-based
simulations that mimic aircraft
dynamics and flight controls.

Innovative
features in the new
Trainer include:
- Multiple configurations
to offer training
for a wide variety
of missions, including
deck landings, search
and rescue, urban
warfare, air ambulance
and special operations.
- Easily reconfigurable
flight controls,
aero simulations,
and virtual in-cockpit
visuals to support
training for a growing
range of aircraft
types.
- An affordable,
easily transportable
platform for on-site
training in dangerous,
challenging and
complex environments.
Atlantis chose laserBIRD
for tracking because
of its fastness, accuracy
and high data quality.
laserBIRD makes 240
measurements per second
with dynamic accuracies
better than 0.7 mm
and 0.5°. It allows
angular head motions
of ±180°in
azimuth and ±°85
in elevation as well
as roll while maintaining
full tracking coverage
of the pilot’s head
motions. Measurements
are highly repeatable
over time without
drift and are unaffected
by metal distortion
or acoustical interference |

with state-of-the-art
head-mounted display
and electric control
loaders to maximize
the pilot-in-the-loop
training experience.

HVT’s predecessor was originally
developed for the Canadian
military to train pilots
in safe landing of a helicopter
onto the deck of a ship
at sea. Building on its
success in that program,
Atlantis is now launching
HVT for a wider range of
applications, leveraging
state-of-the-art virtual
and simulation technologies.
“This is a good example
of an application just made
for laserBIRD,” says Ascension
Vice president of New Business
development, Jack Scully.
“No matter where the trainer
is deployed, laserBIRD will
consistently provide precise
head tracking without worry
about environmental issues.”
The Helicopter
Vocational Trainer
will be shown for the first
time at the Interservice/Industry
Training Simulation Conference,
November 28 - December 1,
2005 in Orlando, Florida.
