laserBIRD Broadens
Applications for Unrestricted
Eye Tracking
BURLINGTON, VERMONT;
NOVEMBER 17, 2003: Applied
Science Laboratories
and Ascension Technology
Corporation today
announced that Ascension's
laserBIRD™
precision motion tracker is
now available with ASL's EYEHEAD
integration package. Using
laserBIRD, ASL's eye tracker
can now collect quantifiable
point of gaze data for use
in ground-based as well as
airborne simulators.
Using a miniaturized scanner
that reflects laser beams
throughout the work space,
laserBIRD delivers highly
accurate position and orientation
tracking without being influenced
by surrounding metals. This
resistance to interference
makes laserBIRD ideal for
use commercial and military
vehicles, simulators and metal
intensive environments.
By combining eye and head
tracking, engineers, designers
and training instructors can
determine where in the 3D
space the subject is looking
and collect statistical data
on those points of gaze. The
introduction of laserBIRD
to ASL's EYEHEAD systems greatly
expands the number of locations
in which coordinated eye and
head tracking can be performed.
The EYEHEAD integration package
uses head-mounted optics with
a head-mounted laserBIRD sensor,
a gimbal and a laser pointer.
The EYEHEAD environment consists
of the laserBIRD transmitter
and up to 20 surfaces of interest
such as instrument panels,
displays, windshields, side
windows and cockpit interiors.
According to Robert Baer,
ASL General Manager, there
are many advantages to EYEHEAD
integration with laserBIRD.
"Our system can superimpose
a point of gaze cursor on
the image viewed without using
a bulky head-mounted camera.
That means less to wear, less
space to occupy and less to
set up. In the confined space
of vehicle simulators or actual
vehicles, those are a significant
benefits. Add to that the
ability to collect distortion-free
data in a metal rich environment,
and we anticipate countless
new applications for which
EYEHEAD integration will be
ideal."
