Ascension to Exhibit
Unrestricted Eye Tracking
and LiveActor Checkpoint Security
Simulation
Visit us at I/ITSEC in Booth
#1331!
BURLINGTON, VERMONT; NOVEMBER
14, 2003: Ascension
Technology Corporation
will exhibit state-of-the-art
motion tracking technology
using ReActor®2
and laserBIRD®
at the Interservice
/ Industry Training, Simulation,
Education Conference
(Booth #1331) December 1-4
in Orlando, Florida. To demonstrate
the versatility of Ascension's
trackers in simulation applications,
The University of Pennsylvania's
LiveActor
virtual environment and Applied
Science Laboratories' EYEHEAD
integration will be showcased.
LiveActor will demonstrate
a prototype police or military
checkpoint training simulation.
Situated in an urban environment
modeled after downtown Philadelphia,
the trainer will use ReActor2
to motion capture real-time
arm gestures from the trainee.
These will, in turn, be used
to control the simulation
of the vehicles and other
virtual participants. LiveActor's
camera view can be switched
from a third-person, external
view to an immersive, first-person
view.
ReActor2 is a new motion
capture system employing digital,
active-optical technology.
The tracker's 544 digital
detectors are embedded in
a 12-bar modular frame for
complete tracking coverage
which also provides Instant
Marker Recognition to eliminate
nearly all occlusion drop-outs.
For the ASL demonstration,
laserBIRD's head tracking
will work in conjunction with
eye tracking to collect digital
data specifying point of gaze
with respect to stationary
objects. In a static helicopter
display, visitors will wear
the eye-tracking optics and
head-tracking laserBIRD sensor
to experience firsthand the
ease of tracking their eyes
without restriction to head
movement.
Using a miniaturized scanner
that reflects laser beams
throughout the work space,
laserBIRD delivers highly
accurate position and orientation
tracking without being influenced
by surrounding metals. This
resistance to interference
makes laserBIRD ideal for
use in airborne and ground-based
simulators. The introduction
of laserBIRD to ASL's EYEHEAD
systems greatly expands the
number of environments now
suitable to coordinated eye
and head tracking.
The Interservice/Industry
Training, Simulation and Education
Conference (I/ITSEC)
promotes cooperation among
the Armed Services, Industry,
Academia and various Government
agencies in pursuit of improved
training and education programs,
identification of common training
issues and development of
multiservice programs. For
