“Funky Cops” TV Show Airing
Worldwide

Wireless’ sensors
for instantaneously capturing
human motions are being
used to animate computer
characters in Antefilms
Productions’ Funky Cops
animated TV series. The
show’s director chose
MotionStar to save time
and add realism to its
disco dancing scenes.
The series is a tribute
to the 1970’s disco scene
and the fictional world
of bumbling police. MotionStar
was deemed essential to
give the production team
real-time feedback in
fast action dance scenes
full of lively movements.

To produce thirty-nine 26-minute
segments, Antefilms needed
many background
dancers for the disco nightclub
scenes. Ascension’s MotionStar
Wireless and Cybergloves captured
the movement data, with Kaydara’s
MOTIONBUILDER™ used extensively
for retargeting.
MotionStar Wireless tracks
hands and body movement using
Ascension’s pulsed DC magnetic
field technology. It can capture
the motions of up to 5 performers
with six degrees of freedom,
simultaneously, without occlusion.
With MotionStar Wireless,
Antefilms’ directors could
optimize their mocap sessions
through real-time choreographing,
capture and instantaneous
playback.
Using MotionStar and MOTIONBUILDER,
the studio was able to produce
two or three useful minutes
of animation in one day’s
shooting. By hand at the standard
10 seconds-per-day pace, those
two or three minutes would
have taken approximately 15
days to get in the can.
According to Jean-Marc Guillemoy,
Antefilms Studio’s General
Manager, the studio decided
to purchase an Ascension MotionStar
magnetic system and MOTIONBUILDER.
“Having our own mocap system
and MOTIONBUILDER answered
our quality control issues
and enabled us to have real-time
feedback during the shooting....[They]
helped streamline our entire
production process and saved
the animation teams a great
deal of time on both Funky
Cops and TV Pirates. We will
continue to use them on future
projects such as Code Lyoko.”
Funky Cops, co-produced with
M6 and TPS Cinema, is airing
in over 100 countries. The
series has been bought by
FOX in US, Fox Kids Latin
America, Fox Kids Europe,
Canal + Scandinavia, Foxtel
in Australia, MTV Germany,
VRAK in Canada, and CFI in
Africa.
