Ascension Announces
New Magnetic Tracker to Meet
Medical Market Requirements
Burlington, Vermont
USA: August 25, 2003:
Ascension Technology Corporation
has today released a new precision
motion tracker to meet Class
B radiated EMI standards,
making it suitable for medical
applications in a broad range
of environments. Medical OEMs
will now find the Flock Class
B meets emission requirements
for use in hospital ultrasound
suites, breast screening clinics,
home care and other environments.
The Flock Class B is a one
sensor tracking device providing
high speed, 6 degrees-of-freedom
tracking of instruments in
ultrasound-based applications.
Using pulsed DC magnetic technology,
the Flock Class B is immune
to interference from stainless
steel and is five times less
susceptible to distortion
caused by nearby metals than
AC technology tracking systems.
This feature makes it extremely
attractive to ultrasound companies
incorporating freehand tracking
of image planes for 3D reconstruction
of scans.
To adapt its versatile Flock
of Birds tracker for medical
use, Ascension developed new
electronics and packaging
to protect against electromagnetic
discharge. Manufactured to
ISO 9001 standards, the Flock
Class B will now allow OEM’s
to provide tracking capability
for the ultrasound and image
guidance products they market
to hospitals and clinics.
Additional redesign has given
the Flock Class B a slimmer
profile than the original
Flock unit. This makes it
easier to integrate with ultrasound
machines when unobtrusive
size and small working environments
are important considerations.
With an unrestricted range
of motion, the tracker is
also ideal for applications
providing biomechanical analysis
and rehabilitative feedback.
“Adaptation of the Flock
tracker to meet Class B standards
is in keeping with Ascension’s
move to make our product portfolio
more robust in medical applications,”
explains Chris Perrera, Ascension
Manager of Medical Sales.
