RadioShack’s Circle
R Group Chooses Ascension’s
MotionStar Wireless

The Circle R Group Broadcast
Communications Division
of consumer electronic
retail giant RadioShack
has selected Ascension
Technology’s MotionStar
Wireless® to provide
motion capture for both
internal use as well as
agency clients and corporations
nationwide. |

The Broadcast Communications
Center provides high quality
video, film and animation services.
They have been in operation
for several years, but are just
now expanding into motion capture.
Currently, the studio is producing
three 60-second spots for Shack
TV featuring Battery Man and
Charge Boy, two informational
characters who help customers
find the right accessories for
their RadioShack products. The
animations are mixed with live
action scenes shot on 35mm film
and produced in-house at the
Broadcast Communications Center.
The decision to go with MotionStar
was based on the system’s
capabilities and onsite training.
According to Ed Delaney, Senior
Director of Broadcast, “After
looking into other systems
with software interface and
what the motion picture industry
was using, it was a clear
choice to go with MotionStar.
Also, the support from Ascension,
with onsite training, allowed
us to produce a spot to see
how it worked. That was a
great selling point.” Delaney
adds that the MotionStar system
is now “another great tool”
for the talented animators
at the Circle R Group. Ascension
also sold a Kaydara MOCAP
and MotionBuilder license.
The motion capture system
will soon be finding a more
permanent home in the center’s
new Mocap Studio. There, outside
clients and internal producers
will be able to bring their
actors in to perform a motion
capture session. They will
then have the option of taking
the data with them to create
their own spot or having the
in-house 3D graphics department
create it for them.
MotionStar Wireless is a
untethered 6DOF motion tracker
capable of capturing the motions
of up to 5 performers simultaneously,
in real time. Using advanced
pulsed DC magnetic field technology,
MotionStar Wireless provides
occlusion-free tracking for
animators in film, gaming
and virtual reality.
Ascension’s MotionStar and
MotionStar Wireless have been
used to animate many notable
productions such as Sony’s
The Getaway, Star Wars pre-animations,
and television series such
as Funky Cops, Starship Troopers
and Jay Jay the Jet Plane.
