Ascension Unveils ReActor®2 Next-Generation MoCap Tracker

Burlington, Vermont USA: May 12, 2003: Ascension Technology today announced the release of ReActor 2 (R2), an advanced motion capture system employing digital, active-optical technology. R2 is the next generation of Ascension’s successful ReActor tracking system which introduced wireless, clean, lightweight infrared active-optical tracking to the mocap market.

R2’s 544 digital detectors are embedded in a 12-bar modular frame for complete tracking coverage. As with its predecessor, R2 offers Instant Marker Recognition to eliminate nearly all occlusion drop-outs. Robust, new algorithms improve accuracy, reduce noise and provide consistently clean data throughout the capture space.

Unlike other motion capture systems in which frequent calibrations and breakdowns are the norm, R2’s rugged, one-piece frame eliminates tripod alignment headaches and the need for camera calibration. Once the system is set up, data capture can begin immediately. R2’s FusionCore software provides complete diagnostics and real-time visualization of system parameters.

To guarantee performance, each R2 installation is done by Ascension technicians who set up the system, train users, and integrate the R2’s outputs with users’ software.

“We developed R2 to tackle the many problems inherent in capturing motions. It gives consistently accurate tracking throughout the capture area without data drop-out or gaps. And it minimizes post processing,” says Ascension Vice President Jack Scully. “R2 works in any environment with little or no calibration, and it runs with most 3D animation software packages.”

R2 is competitively priced with all other optical systems that produce superior quality data. It will be available in late May 2003.

Ascension Technology Corporation (Burlington, Vermont USA) develops motion tracking solutions for 3D computer-graphics applications in animation, military targeting systems, simulation, biomechanics and medical imaging.
