New Ascension Metal
Detection Heightens Trackers'
Accuracy
BURLINGTON, VERMONT; MAY
7, 2004: Ascension
Technology today
announced the implementation
of a new METAL DETECTION
utility for its magnetic trackers.
It provides users with quantitative
information on potential interference
caused by the presence of
certain metals in the tracking
environment. Users will find
the metal detection information
gives them specific means
by which they can detect and
adjust for output degradation,
thereby ensuring optimum tracking
accuracy at all times.
The new METAL DETECTION command
warns users of a reduction
in accuracy caused by so-called
“bad” metals near the transmitter
or sensor – thick aluminum,
steel with high magnetic permeability,
etc. Unlike “good” metals,
such as 300 series stainless
steel or titanium, bad metals
distort the magnetic field
which results in distorted
measurements.
Several types of output degradation
are identified by the new
command: loss or reduction
of sensor accuracy, transmitter
accuracy or system electronic
accuracy. If interference
is caused by high electromagnetic
noise or the dynamic movement
of the sensor, METAL DETECTION
will indicate such.
Ascension’s motion tracking
devices are used in a broad
range of applications and
environments. Thus, some users
may want the METAL DETECTION
to be sensitive to very small
amounts of metal in the environment
while other applications may
only want the error indicator
sensitive to large amounts
of metal. The new command
provides users with the ability
to adjust the sensitivity
of the error measurement to
the users’ environment.
Metal detection is now available
for the following DC magnetic
trackers: Flock of Birds,
pcBIRD, miniBIRD, Nest of
Birds and MotionStar Wired.
Ascension Technology Corporation
develops magnetic, optical
and inertial motion-tracking
solutions for 3D computer-graphics
applications in military targeting
systems, simulation, virtual
reality, biomechanics, animation
and medicine. For more information,
