Ascension and CIMIT to Display New Minimally Invasive Visualization Tool at SAGES Annual Meeting

BURLINGTON, VERMONT; MARCH 19, 2004: Ascension Technology and the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT) will exhibit a new laparoscopic ultrasound probe in booth #935 at the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Annual Meeting. The conference will take place in Denver, CO March 31 to April 3. The probe showcased by Ascension and CIMIT is part of a new intraoperative visualization system for minimally invasive surgery. It incorporates laparoscopic ultrasound (Lap/Us) for staging pancreatic cancer.

All conference attendees are invited to stop by the booth to see the Lap/US probe exhibit and obtain more information about Ascension’s tracking products and their diversified medical applications.

CIMIT is an Ascension partner in the development of medical imaging and simulation devices using magnetic motion tracking technology. Integration of Ascension’s new microBIRD™ miniaturized 6 degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) tracking sensor to a laparoscopic ultrasound probe enables precise quantitative tracking of the probe tip.

microBIRD measures the exact location (position and orientation) of its 1.8 mm sensors which often are attached to instruments for intra-body guidance and visualization. In conjunction with an imaging device, microBIRD lets the surgeon “see” inside the patient. With no occlusion or line-of-sight restrictions and no distortion due to nearby conductive metals, microBIRD can be used for targeting of instruments in minimally invasive surgery and procedures.

Recent research has shown that Lap/US is a helpful adjunct to staging pancreatic cancer, providing higher soft tissue resolution than MRI or CT. Two-dimensional Lap/US has not been widely accepted, however, because surgeons innately think about anatomy in three dimensions. Now the CIMIT Lap/US with microBIRD can display data in the context of preoperative 3D imaging. This combines the strength of both modalities—high tissue resolution and a view in 3D space.

Ascension Technology Corporation, based in Burlington, Vermont, USA, is a world leader in magnetic motion tracking solutions for medical applications. More information about Ascension trackers is available at www.ascension-tech.com. For more information about CIMIT, visit www.cimit.org.
