Internav Staff Joins
Ascension to Develop Next-Generation
Tracking Devices
Burlington, VT (USA),
February 17, 2003: Motion
tracking manufacturer Ascension
Technology has added
75 man-years of magnetic tracking
expertise to its company by
hiring the entire staff of
Internav, Inc.
an Essex Junction, Vermont
company which dissolved at
the end of 2002.
Established in 1997, Internav
developed highly innovative
magnetic tracking devices
for use in minimally invasive
medical procedures. In its
five years, the company developed
a number of custom tracking
solutions for their medical
clientele. Internav’s work
significantly advanced the
state-of-the-art in magnetic
motion tracking, especially
the development of miniaturized
sensing technologies and corrective
techniques for overcoming
metallic distortion.
For Ascension, the availability
of the Internav team represented
a golden opportunity to rapidly
increase its skill sets for
developing new tracking devices.
Ascension already holds a
commanding lead worldwide
in marketing patented DC magnetic
tracking devices for the medical
arena. Its trackers are widely
used to capture ultrasonic
image planes for making 3D
images of organs, to guide
instruments to targets within
the human body, and to provide
viewpoint control in medical
training devices.
“Our goal is to develop new
tracking products that can
be used anywhere by anyone
at any time.” said Ascension
president, Ernest Blood. “The
track record and proficiency
that the Internav team brings
to the table will help us
get there. We are confident
of great contributions from
each of them.”
Said Internav president Mark
Schneider, “Internav is pleased
to have its technology and
experience merged with that
of Ascension’s. We have respected
one another’s work for years
while using up precious resources
to achieve similar aims. Now
we’re all in the same boat,
rowing together. The synergism
in joining forces will enable
Ascension to take giant steps
forward in developing new
magnetic tracking technology
for the future.”
Ascension Technology Corporation
in Burlington, Vermont develops
magnetic, optical, and inertial
motion-tracking solutions
for 3D computer-graphics applications
in military targeting systems,
simulation, virtual reality,
biomechanics, animation, and
medicine. For more information,
