Ascension Nest of Birds Price Reduction Expands Users' Tracking Options

Burlington, Vermont USA: February 3, 2003: Ascension Technology has lowered the price of its versatile 4-sensor Nest of Birds™ motion tracker. Lean manufacturing initiatives improved the Nest of Birds’ production process allowing Ascension to drop the price from $8,595 to $7,345 for a full-up tracker. This lower price makes the Nest more accessible to users and gives them a greater choice of Ascension tracking options.

Suitable for head, hand and instrument tracking, the Nest tracks position and orientation with 6 DOF in real time. With the ability to track four sensors simultaneously using a dedicated processor for each sensor, the Nest achieves the highest measurement rates possible regardless of the number of sensors tracked. This makes the Nest up to four times faster than a four-sensor FasTrak from Polhemus, Inc. The Nest’s DC magnetic field technology also makes it five times less sensitive to conductive metal distortion than the AC magnetic FasTrak.

The Nest of Birds supports most 3D visualization and simulation graphics applications and can easily be optimized for CAVE environments. Its real-time capability suits a range of applications from biomechanical and human factors research to telerobotics and simulation. It is also ideal for broadband use—interactive gaming, web avatars and multi-user virtual interaction.

As a plug-and-play tracker with a USB interface option, the Nest is easier to set up and use than many complex tracking systems. The small footprint created by having a compact single chassis for all electronics and the power supply makes it highly adaptable to most work spaces. The Nest is less expensive than most comparable tracking systems
