Ascension to Unveil new microBIRD Tracker at MMVR

BURLINGTON, VERMONT; JANUARY 9, 2004: Ascension Technology will display a prototype of the new microBIRD motion tracker in Booth #130 at the 12th Annual Medicine Meets Virtual Reality Conference January 14-17, 2004, in Newport Beach, CA. The microBIRD has been designed for minimally invasive medical procedures including computer-assisted and robotic surgery. Development of microBIRD is being funded in part by a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).

microBIRD applications include 3D measurement of instruments such as biopsy needles, catheters, probes, robotic end-effectors and scopes—all of which need precise 6 degrees-of-freedom tracking when inserted in the human body. Employing a pulsed DC magnetic field sensing technology to minimize metallic distortion, microBIRD also overcomes the limitations of line-of-sight tracking devices which are bulky and easily occluded. Additional technological developments to further minimize real time metallic distortion will be made as the DARPA project progresses.

At MMVR, Ascension partners will also show how miniBIRD sensors are used in medical simulation and training applications: Simbionix will display the Uro Mentor simulator for safe hands-on training and practice of endourology diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT) will exhibit the VIRGIL Chest Trauma Training Simulator System developed to teach Army medics how to treat collapsed lungs and blood or air in the chest cavity.

All conference attendees and media representatives are invited to stop by the Ascension booth (#130) to see the microBIRD exhibit and obtain more information about Ascension’s tracking products and their diversified medical applications.

Ascension Technology Corporation, based in Burlington, Vermont, USA, is a world leader in magnetic motion tracking solutions for medical applications. More information about Ascension trackers is available at www.ascension-tech.com.
