Neurosurgery
Image-guided neurosurgery was one of the first applications of sensor tracking of medical instruments. Pioneers, such as Compass International, have performed hundreds of procedures that rely on sensors to correlate instrument trajectory and placement with Computed Tomography (CT) and/or MRI data registered to the patient's brain.
Set-up for Compass' Cygnus-PFS image-guided system. Cygnus' neuro probe is tracked with a sensor referenced to a mid-range transmitter mounted on a sterotaxic frame.
